Champions League 2026/27 Pots: Who Could Real Madrid and Manchester United Face?
With two weeks to go before the August 27 draw, UEFA has already locked in Pots 1 and 2 for the 2026/27 league phase. Here's what we know about the two toughest pots, and who the continent's biggest clubs could end up facing.
Pot 1 Has Nine of Europe's Biggest Names
Pot 1 is set: holders PSG line up alongside Real Madrid, Arsenal, Manchester City, Liverpool, Barcelona, Atlético Madrid, Bayern Munich and Inter Milan. Every club in the league phase is guaranteed to draw two opponents from this pot — meaning literally every one of the 36 teams will play two of these nine sides.
For Real Madrid specifically, sitting in Pot 1 means they're guaranteed to face two Pot 2 sides, two Pot 3 sides and two Pot 4 sides, alongside two more Pot 1 rivals — a fixture list that could easily include a reunion with Arsenal or a first competitive Mourinho-era meeting with City.
Manchester United Are Back — And Landed in a Loaded Pot 2
After a two-year absence from the competition, Manchester United return to the Champions League as a Pot 2 side, joining Aston Villa, Roma, Real Betis, Borussia Dortmund, Sporting CP, Porto, Club Brugge and PSV Eindhoven.
As a Pot 2 club, United are guaranteed two fixtures against Pot 1 opposition — meaning a trip to face Real Madrid, PSG, Bayern or another Pot 1 heavyweight is already a mathematical certainty before a single ball is drawn on August 27.
Pots 3 and 4 Are Still Being Sorted
Pot 3 already features Napoli, RB Leipzig, Villarreal, Feyenoord, Lille, Shakhtar Donetsk and Galatasaray, while Como and Lens have been confirmed for Pot 4. The remaining seven places — reserved for the playoff round winners — won't be finalized until those ties wrap up on August 25-26, one day before the draw.
That means the seven clubs still fighting through the playoff round (Celtic, Fenerbahçe, Lyon and the rest) won't know which pot they land in until the very last moment — a detail that could reshuffle the bottom two pots right before the draw goes live in Nyon.
What's at Stake on August 27
Each of the 36 clubs plays eight matches — two against opponents from each of the four pots, four at home and four away — with no two clubs from the same country allowed to meet. The draw is expected to run with software assistance, same as the last two seasons, to produce a full set of 144 fixtures within minutes.
Matchday 1 kicks off just twelve days later, on September 8, so there won't be much time to dwell on the results once the fixture list is out.
