36 Clubs, One Table
Since the 2024/25 reform, the Champions League has left behind the traditional eight groups of four teams. Instead, all 36 qualified clubs compete in a single standings table known as the "league phase."
Each club plays 8 matches — 4 at home and 4 away — against eight different opponents, drawn from four pots of nine teams each based on UEFA coefficient rankings. One key rule: no club can face another from its own country during this phase.
How Teams Qualify for the Round of 16
Once all 8 matches are played, the top 8 teams in the table advance directly to the round of 16 — no extra step required.
Clubs finishing 9th through 24th enter a two-legged play-off round to complete the round of 16 bracket. The bottom 12 clubs (25th to 36th) are eliminated from the competition entirely.
Key Dates for the 2026/27 Season
The league phase draw takes place on August 27, 2026, with Matchday 1 played September 8-10. The league phase runs through January, spanning 8 matchdays in total.
The Grand Final of this 72nd edition of the tournament — the third under the league-phase format — will be played on June 5, 2027 at the Estadio Metropolitano in Madrid, which previously hosted the 2019 final.
