One of the biggest transfers of the summer is done. Rodri, the reigning Ballon d'Or winner, has left Manchester City for Barcelona after seven trophy-laden years — and he did it by turning down Real Madrid along the way.

Rodri joined Manchester City from Atlético Madrid in 2019 and became one of the most complete midfielders of his generation, anchoring a side that won six Premier League titles and the 2023 Champions League during his time at the Etihad.
His departure closes one of the most successful individual runs in recent English football — City now have to find a way to replace a player Pep Guardiola once called simply impossible to replace.

Barcelona had two earlier bids rejected before agreeing a deal worth an initial €60 million, rising to as much as €76.5 million with performance-based add-ons. Rodri has signed a four-year contract at Camp Nou.
It's a significant outlay for a Barcelona side already rebuilding around a title challenge, but one the club judged necessary to add a genuine defensive-midfield anchor to a squad chasing PSG for the Champions League.
Snubbing Real Madrid
The move carries extra weight because of who missed out: Real Madrid also made an approach, but Rodri chose their fiercest rivals instead — a decision that instantly makes this one of the most talked-about transfers of the window in Spain.
It also hands Barcelona a rare edge in El Clásico for a position both clubs consider crucial, right as both enter the 2026/27 Champions League as Pot 1 seeds.
